Just read this article  http://www.campingroadtrip.com/merlin-the-road-tripping-dog about a woman and a dog who go on road trips together. 

The dog picks the route; the woman lays maps out on the floor and throws dog treats all over them, and whichever treats he eats are the places they visit.  Pretty cool!  It also includes a lot of good ideas for taking care of the dog when traveling.
